What does gluten-free mean for beer?
Beer is usually brewed from barley or wheat, and both contain gluten. Gluten-free beer is brewed with grains that contain no gluten, such as rice, maize, buckwheat or sorghum, or with barley where an enzyme breaks down the gluten during brewing. In the EU, beer may be called gluten-free if it contains less than 20 milligrams of gluten per kilo.
Coeliac disease or gluten intolerance?
Then always check the label of the beer itself too. It says whether the brewer sells the beer as gluten-free. Not sure about a beer? Just ask us.
