Smoothie sours, also called pastry sours, are sour beers with a lot of fruit purée, often combined with vanilla, coconut, marshmallow or other dessert flavours. Thick, fruity and sweet-sour, and our best-selling sour beers.
What makes a smoothie sour?
The base is usually a fresh sour beer, made like a gose or Berliner Weisse. A large amount of unfermented fruit purée goes in, which makes the beer thick like a smoothie and keeps the fruit flavour full. Pastry sours go one step further, with flavours like cheesecake, pastry or ice cream. Untappd has its own category for them, Sour - Smoothie / Pastry, and all the beers on this page fall under it.
Good to know
- Keep them cold: there is a lot of fruit in them, and the yeast in the can can start fermenting again. Cold keeps the yeast dormant, so put them in the fridge.
- Lactose and vegan: some smoothie sours contain lactose (milk sugar), marshmallow or other ingredients that are not vegan. Check the label if you want to avoid these.
- Strength: from alcohol-free to quite strong; the percentage is listed with each beer.
