A brewery in Tadcaster since 1758
Tadcaster has been a brewing town since the 14th century, thanks to wells rich in gypsum. The Old Brewery was founded there in 1758 as Backhouse & Hartley Brewery. Samuel Smith calls itself the oldest brewery in Yorkshire and is still an independent family business.
The brewery is known for its conservative way of working. Part of the beers still go to the customer by draught horse, the brewery has its own cooper who makes casks, and in the company's pubs music, television and mobile phones are banned. Besides the brewery, Samuel Smith also runs pubs and hotels. Visitors rarely get in.
Water from their own well and Yorkshire Square
The brewing water comes from the original well, which was sunk more than 250 years ago. The yeast dates from the early twentieth century and the hops are weighed by hand by the master hop blender. An importer calls Samuel Smith the last brewery to use the classic Yorkshire Square system for fermentation.
The range is wide, from lager to fruit beer and cider, but the core is classic English: brown ale, porter and stout. In 1978 the beers reached the American market via importer Merchant du Vin, where they became the benchmark for the emerging craft beer movement. Except for Yorkshire Stingo, the beers are vegan, registered with The Vegan Society.
