Almost everything gone first, then a fresh start
Before 1920, American breweries thrived. Then came Prohibition: breweries were only allowed to make 'near beer' with little alcohol, and many small brewers went under. After repeal, it was mainly the big players that grew, and light lagers made with rice became the standard. By 1978, only 89 breweries were left in the whole country.
The turnaround began in the 1960s. In 1965, Fritz Maytag bought the struggling Anchor Brewing in San Francisco and revised the recipe for Anchor Steam. In 1976, Jack McAuliffe started New Albion Brewing Company, generally seen as the country's first microbrewery. In 1979, the law that legalised home brewing took effect, and amateurs became entrepreneurs. Ken Grossman opened Sierra Nevada Brewing Company in 1980 and released his Pale Ale a year later, driven by Cascade hops. Michael Jackson's 1977 book The World Guide to Beer also gave American brewers an overview of styles to experiment with.
Hops first, and almost anything goes
American brewers are known for their hoppy beers. In 2014, IPA topped the list of craft styles, ahead of pale ale and amber ale. In 2018, American IPA lost its position as the most-entered category at the Great American Beer Festival for the first time in 16 years, to the new Juicy/Hazy IPA category.
Taste shifted within the ingredients too. Caramel malt, for years a hallmark of American craft beer, has fallen out of favour across most of the industry, because brewers now focus on hop flavour and hop aroma. Beyond that, you can find almost any flavour or style: from tropical IPAs to stouts with tiramisu influences and sour beers with raspberry. In 2023, the number of American craft breweries rose to nearly 10,000.

Frequently asked questions
What is typical American beer?
American craft beer is best known for hoppy beers such as pale ale and IPA, often with citrus and pine notes from American hops. In 1981, Sierra Nevada released a Pale Ale built around Cascade hops. Besides that, there are stouts, barleywines and sour beers in almost every variety.
Which American breweries are well known?
Historically well known are Anchor Brewing, Sierra Nevada Brewing Company and the Boston Beer Company, maker of Samuel Adams Boston Lager. At Hoptimaal you'll find, among others, Other Half Brewing Co., Revolution Brewing and Jackie O’s Brewery.
What did Prohibition do to American breweries?
From 1920, breweries were only allowed to make 'near beer' with little alcohol, which made many small breweries disappear. Large breweries kept growing after 1933, and by 1978 the country had only 89 breweries left.
